For many seniors, cannabis comes with decades of baggage. We grew up hearing words like reefer madness, marijuana, pot, and weed; usually accompanied by warnings, stigma, and plenty of misinformation. That’s 90 years of misinformation that has been circling around our bodies since 1937. That’s a long time to keep people in the dark. It’s time to open the shades and pull back the curtains. (As of this post, August 2026, 41 new medical and 24 both recreational and medical dispensaries around the USA)
Now cannabis is legal in New York, medically and recreationally. Dispensaries are opening across the state, doctors are discussing cannabinoids, researchers are studying the plant, and seniors are among those asking some of the most important questions.
So what changed?
Almost everything.
Today’s cannabis comes in many forms, from flower and edibles to tinctures, capsules, topicals, and beverages. Products can contain different amounts of THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids. Labels, testing, dosing, and regulations have transformed the experience, but understanding it all can still feel like learning a new language.
That’s where education matters. Seniors shouldn’t be expected to forget decades of stigma overnight, nor should they be talked down to. They deserve honest information, plain language, and the freedom to make their own informed decisions.
We’ve come a long way from Reefer Madness. Now it’s time for a little reefer clarity.
