Don’t Trash Those Leaves – They’re Gold

Close-up of cannabis leaves highlighting their unique structure and potential medicinal properties, relevant to recent research on flavoalkaloids.

Cannabis just got even more interesting.

Researchers at Stellenbosch University in South Africa discovered something brand-new hiding in cannabis leaves: flavoalkaloids. These rare compounds—never seen in cannabis before—are highly valued in medicine for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and even anti-cancer potential.

The team studied just three strains and uncovered 79 unique phenolic compounds. Twenty-five were completely new to cannabis, and sixteen were these rare flavoalkaloids. The kicker? They were found mostly in the leaves—the part most growers and trimmers toss away without a second thought.

Lead researcher Dr. Magriet Muller says cannabis already contains over 750 known metabolites, but these results prove the plant’s chemistry is still full of surprises. If scientists are just now finding new medicinal compounds in the “waste” material, imagine what else is waiting to be uncovered.

Don’t bag those leaves for the compost pile just yet. They’re not trash—they’re treasure.
